About Our Group Music Programs
Paper Moon Music has taught private music lessons in San Diego since 2004. Building on that foundation, our Bay Park studio now offers group Music Programs for kids, teens, and adults: a Jazz Ensemble, a Rock Band class, and Little Musicians, a music class for babies and toddlers. Each program runs in 9-to-15-week sessions with a named, professionally trained instructor, and gives students a real reason to keep practicing, whether it be a showcase, a new community, or simply a joyful first musical experience with a parent.

Jazz Ensemble
Our adult and youth jazz ensemble in San Diego pairs musicians in a live combo setting where students read chord charts, trade instrumental solos, and perform as a full band, not just play along to a recording. Repertoire leans toward swing, bossa, funk, Brazilian, and Afro-Caribbean to work up.
- Who it’s for: At least intermediate-level musicians
- Youth Classes (1-2): Middle School through High School, ages 11- 18 years old
- Adult Classes (2): Adults 18+
- Prerequisites:
- For Brass, Reed, Guitar, Bass & Piano
- Able to play major and minor scales
- Able to recognize chord symbols (CMaj7, C7, C–7, C–7♭5)
- Some sight-reading ability
- Interest in improvising, experimenting, and trying new concepts
- For Drummers & Percussionists
- Able to play a variety of grooves and feels:
- Swing
- Brazilian
- Bossa
- Funk
- Afro-Caribbean
- For Brass, Reed, Guitar, Bass & Piano
- Group size: 4-8 students
- Schedule: Thursday evenings, 60 minutes weekly, 15-week session
- Between 5pm-7pm for youth and 7pm-9pm for adults. The exact time depends on sign-ups.
- Starting: Thursday, September 3rd, 2026
- Ending: Thursday, December 17th, 2026

- Tuition: $475 per 15-week session
- Active Paper Moon Students get $50 off!
- Instrument: Students provide their own instrument; keyboard and drums are provided in-studio
- Enrollment: Submit the Jazz Ensemble Form and an audition tape.

Meet the instructor: Jeno
Jeno started playing drums at age two and was performing professionally by 15. He trained in percussion at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and holds a degree in jazz performance from Cardinal Stritch University, where his work explored Afro-Caribbean rhythms and Latin jazz combos. He’s released a solo album, spent years teaching piano technique and leading ensembles with the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, and now brings over 30 years of teaching experience to students of all ages in San Diego, across piano, organ, drums, bass, and more.

Rock Band Class
Our youth and adult rock band classes in San Diego put 5-6 musicians together as a real band: students choose their own setlist, can request original songs, and learn to perform together rather than just practice individually. Like the Jazz Ensemble, students read charts, take turns soloing, and build toward a live show.
- Who it’s for: All levels welcome! Beginners get simplified parts while advanced players take on lead roles
- Youth Class (1): Middle School through High School, ages 11- 18 years old
- Adult Class (1): Adults 18+
- Group size: 5-6 students
- Schedule: Monday evenings, 60 minutes weekly, 12-week session
- Starting: Monday, September 21st, 2026
- Ending: Monday, December 14th, 2026
- Between 7pm-9pm, exact time depends on sign-ups.

- Tuition: $400 per 12-week session

Meet the instructor: Andrew
Andrew is a San Diego-based guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, and media composer with 15+ years of live performance experience across metal, rock, jazz, funk, and video game and anime soundtracks. He’s completing his BA in Music with an emphasis in Composition and Recording Technology, and composes music for film, games, and online creators — experience he brings into class through songwriting, arranging, and modern music technology, alongside instrumental technique. He teaches guitar, bass, violin, voice, ukulele, piano, and more.

Little Musicians
Little Musicians is a toddler music class in San Diego where little ones explore rhythm, songs, movement, and instruments alongside a caregiver, building early developmental skills through music. Sessions run 9 weeks with no current enrollment cap, so siblings and friends are always welcome.
- Who it’s for: Babies and toddlers, 6-36 months, with a parent or caregiver
- Group size: Open enrollment, no current limit
- Schedule: Tuesday mornings, 45 minutes weekly, 9-week session
- Start: Tuesday, September 15th, 2026
- End: Tuesday, November 10th, 2026
- Time: 9:30AM -10:15AM
- Location: Paper Moon Event Hall (1241 Morena Blvd., San Diego, CA)
- Tuition: $199 per 9-week session
- 25% sibling discount; siblings under 6 months attend free
- Enrollment: First come, first served. Drop-ins welcomed based on availability ($25)
Meet the instructor: Karina
Karina is a classically trained pianist, skilled trombonist, and multi-instrumentalist with 15+ years of experience across rock, jazz, pop, funk, reggae, and improvisation. She holds a Bachelor’s in Music from the University of Florida and performs regularly with local San Diego bands. Karina also teaches piano, trombone, guitar, and ukulele, helping students set and grow toward their own musical goals — always keeping the focus on making music fun.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to audition for the Jazz Ensemble or Rock Band class? Yes. Both the Jazz Ensemble and Rock Band class require an audition, since students are placed as intermediate (or beginner-to-intermediate, for Rock Band) musicians in a live group setting. Little Musicians has no audition and is first come, first served.
Is there a trial class before I commit? There isn’t a trial class for Jazz Ensemble or Rock Band, but Paper Moon Music hosts a free jazz workshop on the first Sunday of every month (unless specified) with our jazz instructor Jeno, a great low-commitment way to experience the ensemble format before signing up!
Do I need to bring my own instrument? Yes, students provide their own instrument for Jazz Ensemble and Rock Band, with the exception of keyboard and drums, which are provided in the studio.
Is there a performance at the end of the program? Yes. Both the Jazz Ensemble and Rock Band class build toward a live public showcase each December, and students help shape the setlist, including requesting original songs.
Where do these programs take place? The Jazz and Rock Music Programs currently run at the Paper Moon Music studio in Bay Park, San Diego, while the Little Musicians run at the adjacent building, Paper Moon Event Hall.
